2008 BMW X6 Scooped

These excellent spy pics, courtesy of KGP Photography & Winding Road, reveal for the first time the shape of the long rumoured BMW X6. I guess your first question is what exactly the X6 is. The answer is a sporty mid-sized crossover vehicle based on the 2007 X5, or if you preffer, BMW’s way to differentiate itself from the Mercedes CLS. Despite the camouflage it’s clear that the X6’s body will use coupe inspired elements such as the steeply raked windshield and slopped roof-line along with SUV characteristics like the raised ground clearance and the “chunky” front part.

While snooping around in an attempt to find some “official” info on the X6, I stumbled upon an apocalyptic interview that Norbert Reithofer, BMW's new CEO gave to Automotivenews just a few days ago. Check out the part referring to BMW’s future crossover plans bellow:

  • AN: “Are you reconsidering what kind of crossover you will build in the United States in 2008 because of the poor market reaction to the Mercedes-Benz R class?”
  • Norbert Reithofer, BMW CEO: We have two vehicles in mind. The first is a so-called SAV coupe. We saw the car already. It's the first product. We know clearly in our minds what we want in 2008.The second product is between a sedan and an SAV. We said we will not call it a crossover but a BMW interpretation of a roomy car concept, with a lot of functionality and a lot of luxury. We did not look at the Mercedes R class. We said it is wrong to follow others.”
